Horses are such powerful, sculptural creatures, and probably the first thing you look at will be their eyes. Large, lucid and alert, or wide and rolling, you’ll make a quick decision on whether this horse is going to step on your toes or invite an ear rub just by looking at its eyes.

When their eyes are shut, horses exude a sort of monumental calm, which is what I was trying to catch here. By cropping the image in close, the horse’s head loses its boundaries and just becomes a set of angled planes, with subtle shifts of colour and texture. And that delicate, gentle eye becomes the centre of attention.
