Woven leaves

Winter in the garden can seem like a pause from the colour and spectacle of the other seasons. But that’s probably why I’ve grown to like photographing it so much. There are no bright colours or showy forms trying to catch my attention; instead there is a muted palette and the basic plant structure becomes my focus.

These strap-like crocosmia leaves have been bleached to a mix of soft browns and greys, dusted by a fine frost. They overlap as though they are the woven wrap on a package, with one looped leaf as the bow. The repeating horizontals and the gentle colours make this image restful and peaceful, and evoke the pause of winter.

This photograph is available as a fine art print; I would recommend the Hahnemuhle art paper as the texture would work beautifully with the subtle colours of this photograph.
