Swimming on a Devon beach

A family enjoy a day on an unspoilt beach in South Devon, swimming and canoeing in the pristine clear waters. This beach is reached by boat from nearby Hope Cove and shelters beneath sheer cliffs, so is the perfect uncrowded holiday getaway.

Hope Cove is a delightful village in the heart of the South Devon Heritage Coast, which itself is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a remote fishing village with an intriguing history that includes shipwrecking, smuggling, the Spanish Armada and Haile Selassie in exile.

Although there are people in this image, the real subject of this photograph is the sea. The startlingly clear water with its jewel-like colours traces the effect of three forces on it: the ripples caused by the wind, the regular pulses of incoming waves, and the concentric circles from the man swimming.
