Dartmoor copse

in Devon landscapes

High on Dartmoor the majority of trees are wind-shaped and gnarled, but this copse is unusually tall and straight. They have the advantage of being in a valley created by the West Dart River, and so have a little shelter from the prevailing winds. The colours are of moorland spring: bleached grasses, yellow gorse bloom and the red-tinged buds of beech leaves.
