High on the moorland of Dartmoor, the West Dart River begins its journey through some of the most beautiful and varied scenery in Devon. Long before it forms the mighty Dart estuary with its deep harbour at Dartmouth, and long before it meets with its sister the East Dart to flow past Buckfast Abbey and ancient town of Totnes, the West Dart crosses the moors. Here it is a young river fresh from the slopes of the tors, passing below the ancient copse of Wistmans Wood.

Springtime comes late to the moors, and the grasses and sedge are still bleached to a honey-gold by the harsh winter. As the river meanders, it reflects the blue of the spring sky.
