in Nature abstracts

I almost regret adding a title to this as it takes away the pleasurable guessing game that happens when people see this as a print. It’s such an unfamiliar and graphic object that it gives room for imagination – except for one man who pointed, declared “pentaradial symmetry” and knew exactly that it had to be the underside of a starfish exoskeleton. It is one of those strange things in nature that isn’t symmetrical with even numbers; we’re used to two legs, or four, or even eight, but five divisions are a little more unfamiliar. Or so we think. Cut an apple through it’s equator and the seeds show pentaradial symmetry too.
