One of the most enjoyable things about using a macro lens is being able to see unfamiliar worlds in miniature. When you get as close as you can,  to the limits of the lens’s focussing ability, the amount of the scene that is actually sharp is just the tiniest sliver. All the rest is thrown into blur. This means that the unfamiliar tiny world can be transformed into something almost imaginary.

When seen from above, this cactus seems to create a kaleidoscopic effect with the criss-crossing spines.
