Winter dawn, Sampford Peverell

A soft, grey dawn in winter in the village of Sampford Peverell in Devon. Mist rises from the canal and a swan sleeps in her nest among the reedmace, with the 15th Century church of St John the Baptist behind. The Grand Western Canal lies at the heart of the village giving it a distinct waterside flavour, but it wasn’t always so harmonious.  Built in the early 1800’s the canal cut the village in two, demolishing the rectory and forcing the canal company to build two new rectories to replace it, along with new bridges.
