One of the most enjoyable things about using a macro lens is being able to see unfamiliar worlds in miniature. When you get as close as you can,  to the limits of the lens’s focussing ability, the amount of the scene that is actually sharp is just the tiniest sliver. All the rest is thrown into blur. This means that the unfamiliar tiny world can be transformed into something almost imaginary.

Pushing almost too close with a macro lens, this tiny cactus reveals tufts of spines in oranges and whites against its green skin.
