I offer a range of quality images for commercial and editorial use, with the emphasis on the natural world and Devon, United Kingdom. The majority of my images are available under a Rights Managed licence, however I’m also creating a collection of images available as Royalty Free.

To explore these images, visit my gallery where I have arranged images by subject or location such as Devon, landscapes and plant portraits. I have created a separate section for Royalty Free to save you searching through the entire collection if that is the licence model you need.

Occasionally I feature images on this website also, which gives me the opportunity to add some background information. You can browse both rights managed and royalty free images featured on the site by clicking the links on the right of this page.

Licence types

I offer two kinds of commercial licences: Rights Managed and Royalty Free. Each image will only ever be offered as one of these licence types, never both.

Rights Managed images are licensed for a specific purpose. Usage is strictly limited to this agreed purpose in details such as media, timescale and geographical distribution, and the fees reflect these usage details. High-resolution files for ‘comping’ or inspection are available on request. I can provide you with the usage history so you won’t get any nasty surprises with your competitor’s artwork. Royalty Free licences are priced according to image size and, once purchased, can be used as many times as you like without any time constraints. You can use them in any way you like, apart from logos and electronic templates for resale, and as long as they are for “proper” use (not pornographic or defamatory). There are no exclusive rights, and no usage history is available. Browse Royalty Free images

File format

All files are supplied as Jpgs, embedded with Adobe RGB colour profile and with no sharpening applied. Low resolution (500 pixel) watermarked versions of each file can be downloaded for mock-up purposes.

Lightbox

My gallery offers the facility to use a lightbox. This enables you to store groups of images to return to later, or to share with others – useful for decisions within a creative team. You can even rate images or make comments to aid this decision process. There’s no limit to the number of images you can put in a lightbox, or the number of separate lightboxes you can create. Accounts

Making my images available online requires an effective and secure service. I use Photoshelter to power my online gallery as they are leaders in online image storage, protection and delivery. To purchase images, you’ll need to set up a free account with Photoshelter. All that is required is an email address, your name, and a password. These details will never be shared, sold or used outside of Photoshelter and Lou Horton Photography.

Once you have set up your account and logged in, you will be able to make use of the lightbox, access low-resolution ‘comp’ downloads and purchase images.

To set up your account, go to my gallery page and click on the ‘Client area’ link at the top right (or click here). This is where existing users can log in also.

Selecting an image

Once you have discovered the image you need, click on the ‘buy/licence’ button. Click the ‘downloads’ tab if it is not already displayed.

For Rights Managed images, you will need to enter the intended usage of the image, such as size and distribution area. You can choose to ‘Buy it now’ which takes you to the checkout, or to ‘Save for purchase’ which stores your choice for purchase at a later date. Please note that while prices are quoted in Pounds Sterling, the underlying price calculator is in US Dollars. This means that licence fees may vary slightly from day to day to reflect the conversion with different exchange rates.

For Royalty Free images, you will be given a choice of image size (in pixels). You can then select ‘Add to cart’ and continue browsing other images, or ‘Add and checkout’ to complete the purchase.

Payment

You will need to have set up a free account to complete an online purchase of either Royalty Free or Rights Managed images (see above for details).

All major credit cards are accepted for online payments, a service provided through Paypal. You do not need a Paypal account. But if you do, you can choose to pay directly from it.

Please note that the payment window opens separately from the rest of the site, so if you’re using a pop-up blocker please ensure you allow pop-ups from Photoshelter.

Image delivery

Once payment has been taken, your image will be made available to download. Within a few minutes, you’ll be emailed a link to access this image file. Alternatively, you can access it by clicking on ‘Client Area’ on the top right of the page, then selecting ‘My Downloads’.

Each image is a separate download and delivered as a Zip file. You need to download this file within 96 hours of purchase.
